Good (for you) Eats at the Game

Millions of Americans love sports. They faithfully watch their favorite team on television and better yet, they love to head out to the arena or ballpark for some live action. Making healthy food choices may not always be easy when the aroma of hot dogs, bratwurst, cheese fries, and nachos hits your nose. Many of the foods offered at sporting events are packed with saturated fat, sodium, and empty calories. If you are watching your weight, you must also watch which foods you choose at the big game.

First try having a small healthy snack before you head out, which may help to control your hunger while at the game. This may consist of half of a turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato on whole wheat or a yogurt based fruit smoothie. If you don’t have time before the game, try packing a few small snacks such as dried fruit/nut trail mix, low fat string cheese, or a high fiber granola bar. Be prepared: many ballparks and arenas have information on their websites that outline what food is available at the concession stands. This can help you to decide what to eat before you get to the game. Most parks are now offering healthy food choices such as a grilled chicken sandwich, whole-wheat turkey wrap, low fat hot dog, strawberry spinach salad, low fat frozen yogurt and fruit salad. In addition, go easy on the alcohol. Beer, wine, and other alcoholic drinks may go down quickly and can contribute hundreds of additional calories to your diet. Alcohol can also lower your inhibitions, which may cause you to indulge more than you normally would. Finally, if your experience at the ballpark would only be complete with a chilidog or an elephant ear, have them. Choose one of your favorite foods, eat slowly, and savor the flavor. However, get back on track the next day by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and get some physical activity.
