The name “pomegranate” derives from Latin pomum ( “apple” ) and granatus ( “seeded” ). One pomegranate delivers 40% of an adult’s daily vitamin C requirement. It is also a rich source of Vitamins A and E, iron, folic acid and antioxidants. Pomegranate juice contains some of the highest antioxidant capacity as compared to other juices. Antioxidants are important in the prevention of many diseases such as cancer and heart disease. In one study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, pomegranate juice was found to reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol. This cholesterol can form atherosclerotic, or fatty deposits on artery walls leading to heart disease. In addition, pomegranate juice may help to lower blood pressure with similar effects as anti-hypertensive drugs.
